Kitchen & Laundry / Bathroom Renovation: Coburg
Kitchen & Laundry / Bathroom Renovation: Coburg
Project – Kitchen & Laundry / Bathroom Renovation
Suburb – Coburg
Designer – Chris Wing Shing
Builder – Matt Brennan Construction
The Brief
Another rewarding renovation with the team at Matt Brennan Construction, this Coburg home came to us with a clear wish list: modernise a dated kitchen, laundry and bathroom, and find genuine extra storage within a small kitchen footprint. The bathroom and laundry presented their own challenge too, previously two separate rooms connected by a narrow hallway, with the laundry acting as little more than a pass-through space.
The Design
Storage was the defining problem to solve in the kitchen, and the solution was as clever as it was space-efficient: recessing a run of shallow pantry storage directly into the shared bathroom wall, gaining valuable cabinetry without stealing an inch of the kitchen's already tight footprint. The joinery itself makes a real style statement in Polytec Amaro Matt, a warm, muted blush tone that gives the galley kitchen genuine personality, paired with a floating shelf and feature bench in Polytec Plantation Ash Woodmatt for a natural timber contrast. Castella 'Ledge' handles in Satin Stainless Steel run throughout, and Stone Ambassador Carrara Mist benchtops bring a soft, veined finish that ties the whole home together.
The bathroom and laundry transformation is where the biggest structural change happened. Removing the dividing wall between the two former rooms opened up a single large, bright space in its place, tiled floor to ceiling in a soft terrazzo-look finish that gives the room a fresh, contemporary feel. Joinery here shifts to a combination of Polytec Polar White Matt and Polytec Plantation Ash Woodmatt, echoing the kitchen's material palette while suiting the wet-area application, with a floating timber vanity and full-height storage cabinetry making the most of the newly opened footprint. The laundry itself is now cleverly concealed within a full-height cabinet, keeping the appliances and cleaning supplies out of sight without sacrificing function.
The Result
A dated, disconnected footprint transformed into two genuinely modern, functional spaces. The Coburg kitchen now punches well above its size with clever recessed storage and a joinery palette full of character, while the bathroom and laundry have gone from a narrow walk-through to a bright, open room the whole household can enjoy.
