The Brief

Apartment kitchens are all about working within constraints — and this Melbourne city renovation is a great example of what's possible when clever design thinking is applied to a compact space. Our clients had two clear goals: bring some personality and colour into their home, and make far better use of the kitchen they already had. The footprint stayed essentially the same, but the result feels like an entirely different space.

The Design

The transformation started with the layout. By integrating the fridge and adding a concealed pantry using the Kessebohmer Dispensa unit supplied by Hafele, the entire rear wall of the kitchen was freed up — creating a cleaner, more streamlined look that immediately makes the space feel larger. A small but meaningful reconfiguration that makes a significant visual difference.

Repositioning the oven and hotplate off-centre was another considered move, consolidating what had been two awkward prep zones into one generous, practical workspace. The area behind is finished in Grey Tint toughened mirror, which adds depth and reflects light beautifully throughout the kitchen. Hafele Loox 5 LED strip lighting enhances the effect, keeping the space feeling bright and open even within the constraints of an apartment footprint.

Above the island bench, an About Space 'Ashton' pendant adds a sculptural focal point — the kind of detail that elevates a kitchen from functional to genuinely designed.

The colour brief is where things get really interesting. The joinery is finished in Laminex Denim Natural, a rich, characterful tone that delivers on the clients' desire for colour without overwhelming the space. Polytec Tasmanian Oak Woodmatt to the island ends and rear panel brings warmth and natural texture, grounding the palette beautifully. Stefano Orlati handles in Titanium Grey tie back to the mirror finish and the clients' appliances, creating a cohesive metallic thread across the kitchen.

Benchtops and the island end splashback are finished in Stone Ambassador Zenith White Truffle, installed by Melbourne Marble & Granite — a surface with just enough movement to feel considered alongside the Denim cabinetry. All upper cabinetry is handleless, either finger pull or push-to-open, keeping the upper half of the kitchen clean and uninterrupted.

The Result

What could have been a modest apartment refresh is instead a genuinely striking kitchen renovation — full of colour, texture, and thoughtful detail. Every decision, from the concealed pantry to the off-centre oven placement to the Grey Tint mirror, was made in service of a space that feels bigger, more functional, and far more personal than before.
