Whole Home New Build: Belgrave South

The Brief

One of the largest and most ambitious projects Axis Kitchens has been part of in 2025, this Belgrave South new home build was a true whole-home collaboration with Andrew and the team at Fitzgerald Building Services. The scope was extraordinary: kitchen, pantry, laundry and mudroom, alfresco kitchen, four bedroom robe fit-outs, storeroom, three bathrooms, powder room, living room joinery — with a home office still to come. What makes this project particularly remarkable isn't just the number of spaces involved, but the generous scale of each one. This is a home built without compromise.

The Design

With so many rooms to consider, the design challenge was to create a material language consistent enough to unify the home while allowing each space its own distinct mood. The solution is executed beautifully throughout: a palette built on Polytec Prime Oak Woodmatt, Formica Deep Anthracite (including colour-matched polyurethane), and Formica Storm, with Castella Ledge and Clements handles in Matt Black appearing consistently across every room. Caesarstone Porcelain Smokestone runs through the kitchen, pantry, laundry, alfresco, and vanities — a single stone surface that ties the most-used spaces in the home together with quiet authority.

The kitchen is the centrepiece — and the photos speak for themselves. A generously proportioned galley-style layout with a dramatic full-length island, the kitchen pairs Deep Anthracite cabinetry with Prime Oak Woodmatt overhead joinery and open shelving for warmth and contrast. The Caesarstone Porcelain Smokestone benchtops and island waterfall end are striking in scale and finish, and the Castella Matt Black hardware ties every element together. The open connection to the living space — with its custom Prime Oak and Smokestone TV unit — makes the entire ground floor feel like one cohesive, considered environment.

The alfresco kitchen extends the home's design language outdoors with the same Deep Anthracite cabinetry and Smokestone benchtops, complete with a built-in BBQ, sink, and integrated bar fridge — a fully equipped outdoor entertaining space that matches the interior in both quality and ambition.

The laundry and mudroom are a masterclass in dark, functional design. Floor-to-ceiling Deep Anthracite cabinetry lines the mudroom wall, while the laundry features Smokestone benchtops and splashback, Prime Oak open shelving, and cleverly integrated appliance housing — a space that is striking to look at and exceptional to work in.

The powder room is a showstopper in its own right. Set against deep charcoal-painted walls, a live-edge Spotted Gum slab — supplied by WR Timbers — serves as the vanity shelf, topped with a dark vessel basin and a bold round mirror. It's the kind of detail that stops guests in their tracks and signals that every decision in this home has been made with intention.

The bathrooms carry the Prime Oak Woodmatt vanity cabinetry with Smokestone benchtops throughout, each with double vessel basins, backlit mirrors, and — in the master ensuite — a freestanding bath that anchors the space with effortless elegance. The bedroom robes showcase the palette's versatility: the master walk-in is fitted floor-to-ceiling in Deep Anthracite with LED strip lighting creating a dramatic boutique-wardrobe atmosphere, while the children's rooms feature a mix of Prime Oak and Formica Storm robes with integrated study benchtops — practical, considered, and entirely suited to young occupants.

The Result

A home that sets a new benchmark for what whole-home custom joinery can achieve. From the drama of the alfresco kitchen to the intimacy of the powder room's Spotted Gum shelf, every space in this Belgrave South build has been designed and built with the same level of care, craft, and material intelligence.
