The Brief
The best renovations are a genuine partnership — and this Surrey Hills project is a perfect example of what happens when a client brings real vision to the table. Gail and Steffen Kasch knew what they wanted: a kitchen, pantry, laundry, and powder room that would be bold, considered, and entirely their own. Working closely with Chris Wing Shing, their ideas and instincts shaped every decision in the project, and the result is a renovation that feels as personal as it does beautifully executed.
The Design
The kitchen makes an immediate statement. Cabinetry finished in Dulux Black 10% polyurethane sets a dramatic, confident tone — a choice that takes conviction to commit to and rewards it completely. Against the black joinery, Slice Veneers French Oak in a 10% gloss clear finish introduces warmth and natural grain, the two materials in striking dialogue with each other. It's a combination that feels simultaneously contemporary and timeless, and one that could only have come from clients who knew exactly what they were after.
Caesarstone Statuario Maximus benchtops complete the kitchen — a marble-look stone of real presence and drama that holds its own against the boldness of the black cabinetry. Grey mirror splashbacks add depth and reflect light throughout the space, making the kitchen feel larger and more luminous without softening its edge.
The pantry continues the French Oak veneer doors and grey mirror splashbacks, transitioning to Quantum Quartz Michaelangelo benchtops — a surface that threads through the pantry, laundry, and powder room to provide quiet material continuity across the renovation.
The laundry takes a lighter turn, finished in Dulux Vivid White 30% polyurethane with mirror splashbacks that keep the compact space feeling bright and open. The powder room brings the French Oak veneer back into play alongside Quantum Quartz Michaelangelo benchtops and a combination of plain and grey mirror splashbacks — a small space with real personality and a considered material story of its own.
The Result
A renovation born from genuine collaboration and carried through with conviction. The Surrey Hills project demonstrates what becomes possible when clients arrive with a clear vision and a designer who knows how to realise it — bold material choices, executed flawlessly, in a home that now feels entirely and unmistakably theirs. A standout project, and a pleasure to be part of.
