The Brief

Every now and then a renovation comes along that is less about starting fresh and more about unlocking what was always there. This Wonga Park kitchen had potential written all over it — it just needed someone to see it, and the vision and conviction to bring it to life. The removal of a wall, a new orientation, and a complete rethink of the space transformed what had been a closed, underperforming kitchen into something light, generous, and genuinely inviting.

The Design

The decision to use 18mm raw MDF shaker profile doors — painted on site by the client themselves — is one of the most characterful choices in this renovation, and one that gives the finished kitchen a warmth and authenticity that a standard factory finish simply can't replicate. The main cabinetry is painted in Lexicon Half, a soft warm white that fills the newly opened space with light, while a custom mix blue on the island doors introduces a confident splash of colour that grounds the palette and gives the kitchen its focal point. It's a combination that feels relaxed, personal, and completely at home in a family environment.

The benchtop treatment is equally considered. Silestone Eternal Statuario with a 12mm edge runs across the island — a refined marble-look surface that brings a touch of elegance to the space without undermining its warmth. The perimeter benchtop takes a different and deeply appealing direction: solid Messmate timber, rich in grain and character, that anchors the kitchen in the natural landscape of its Wonga Park setting. The contrast between the two surfaces is one of the renovation's most distinctive and successful details.

The study and window seat continue the Lexicon Half shaker doors, with a 32mm raw MDF benchtop painted to match — cohesive and considered extensions of the kitchen's design language. The ensuite completes the project with the same shaker profile in Lexicon Half and Silestone Eternal Statuario benchtops, tying the bathroom back to the kitchen with a quiet but deliberate material connection.

The Result

Potential realised — completely and beautifully. What was once a closed, underutilised space is now a light-filled family kitchen that makes the most of every square metre and every ray of natural light. The client's own hand in the painting of the cabinetry gives this renovation a personal quality that makes it truly one of a kind. A warm, functional, and deeply considered family home — enjoyed, we hope, for many years to come.
